Carl Johnson's Gallery, in an 1874 storefront on Galena IL's Main Street,
is open 360 days a year. Here Carl displays his current original watercolors
and his reproduction prints. Each year a March "Winter Barns"
show and a June "European Sketch Trip" show is held in Galena.
Carl is typically in the Gallery on Sundays to chat with you about his
art.
All work is displayed in the Gallery in simple wooden frames but is also
available unframed. Carl's prints are offered framed in a variety of colored
mats and ready for your purchase. In the Gallery, Carl also offers t-shirts
and notecards featuring some of his work.
Carl always paints 'on location'. He respects and enjoys his surroundings...
wherever he is. His world is a changing world of place, season and light.
Using pen and ink he details his architectural subjects, adding watercolor
to give the drawings life and atmosphere. Carl prefers to let color alone
define natural subjects, like rural landscapes or flowers.
Carl's interest in art and his early talent have shaped his life. He
holds a BFA in Design from the University of Illinois/Champaign and became
a commercial artist in the metro Chicago area. In 1970 he moved to Galena,
Illinois to paint full time. Galena's Historic District has greatly inspired
him in developing his pen-and-ink and watercolor technique to record historic
architecture. In 1977 Carl published The Building of Galena: An Architectural
Legacy, which includes 15 watercolor illustrations.
Since 1985 Carl has had the privilege of leading sketch trips for U of
IL Architectural students in Europe. Each April he enjoys introducing
watercolor techniques to a new group of students.
As a location painter, Carl now travels broadly, continuously being inspired
by the beauty and diversity of our world. His subject matter has expanded
through the years to include sweeps of landscape and single blossoms,
as well as cityscapes, new and old.
