appears as it did in 1850 - a warm and vibrant, cozy log home near Galena Illinois, for a memorable lodging experience. Inside you'll find a 2 bedroom suite with 2 full baths and a 1 bedroom suite with 1 full bath, as well as private entrances. The suites, in addition to the two bedroom Robert's Retreat log cabin, offer hot tubs, wood-burning fireplaces, full kitchens, laundry, central air/heat, CD stereo, Cable TV/VCR, terry cloth robes & Continental breakfast. Our caterer offers optional meals from picnics to elegant gourmet dinners.

Nearby are Prairie restorations, The Apple River Fort and Historic Village of Elizabeth, Apple River Canyon State Park, Galena Cellars Wine Tasting Room & Winery and Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort.

We are centrally located between Elizabeth, Scales Mound and Galena Illinois, about one mile South of the picturesque Village of Schapville and only a few minutes away to Galena for quaint shops, galleries, museums and fine dining. Across the Mississippi River lies Dubuque for Riverboat Gambling, Boat Tours and the Dog Track.

The Gleneagle suite, with a complete galley kitchen, living area with satellite TV & CD system, has an indoor Jacuzzi, wood burning fireplace and dining area.

A peaceful, country setting surrounds this restored 1830's log cabin named Robert's Retreat. The eight person Jacuzzi is nestled into the private deck extending around the cabin. Antique furnishings and a wood burning fireplace welcome you inside.

A complete kitchen is included; also two bedrooms with queen beds, and a loft with futon and entertainment center.

Since 1993, we have moved and/or rebuilt seven pre-Civil War log cabins. Five more are waiting in the wings to be included in the Home Place lodging facility.

High personal satisfaction has been a life enriching experience for us in our cabin restorations. Knowing that we have helped to preserve our pioneer heritage is very rewarding.

Every year, in almost every State, pioneer log cabins are allowed to fall into ruin; or worse, are bulldozed and burned. The mystique of a wholly handmade wooden structure has an appeal for all of us. Just as a wood-burning fireplace and a pond or waterfall are comforting, a log cabin is a "comfort dwelling"; sturdy and secure.
